In commemoration of world diabetes day the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism, is organizing a Cookery Competition in an effort to create awareness about the nutritional aspects of diabetes home management. Here is the chance for you to see innovative ideas in the making of tasty low calorie, low fat Millets Recipes for diabetes.
Diabetes is on the rise, yet most cases are preventable with healthy lifestyle changes. Some can even be reversed. Taking steps to prevent and control diabetes doesn’t mean living in deprivation. Eating right is vital if you are trying to prevent or control diabetes. A healthy diet for the entire family would also prevent diabetes in those at risk.
A diabetes diet is simply a healthy eating plan that has the appropriate nutrients, low in fat, and moderate in calories. It is a healthy diet for anyone! The only difference is that you need to pay attention to some of your food choices—most notably the carbohydrates you eat. On this basis of creating awareness among the home makers, Cooking Competition was held on October 03, 2015 at Darling Residency, Vellore.
The judges for the event were Dr. SanthoshKorula Jacob, Associate Professor, Department of Orthopedics Unit-II, Dr. Mini Joseph, Assistant Professor in Food & Nutrition, Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism, Mrs. JyothiSrinivasa, Co-ordinator, Namaste Bagayam. The judges were very appreciative of the efforts putting by the participants and also stressed of the needs for easy to cook simple but healthy food items that will help to prevent the rise of diabetes.
A total of 18 teams tested their culinary skills in cooking “Diabetic Millets Recipe”. Mr. Gowthaman. D from Department of Dietetics (Intern) who prepared “VaraguSambar Rice Saai Curd Rice, ThinaiIdiyappam (Egg Semiya), Bajra Egg Noodles, VaraguDosai” won the 1st prize, the second prize went to Ms. Kavitha from Satuvachari, who prepared “VazhaiThanduVaraguArisiPulav, NavadhanyaSuraikkaiAdai, PachaiPayaru Mushroom KudaimilagaiSamaiSadham, KambuSolamKozhu and PoonduVenthayamVaragu Kanji ” and the third prize was shared by two contestants, 1) Ms. Sumithra who prepared “ThinaiPongal, RagiKozhakkatai and Mrs. Ida Florence Emily who prepared “Millet Poggy, Mixed Millet Ball with Ladies Finger, Masala Roti, Millet Uthappam and VaraguUpma.
The Consolation Prices were given to Ms. Ramalakshmi, Mrs. B. AnuBharathi, Ms. Harini and Mrs. RojaRekha.

In Commemoration of World Diabetes Day 2015, the Department of Endocrinology,Diabetes andMetabolism conducted a Dia-Quiz on "Diabetes and Endocrine Disorders" for Nursing Students at College of Nursing, CMC Vellore on November 6, 2015. Mrs. RumaNayak, Deputy Nursing Superintendent, Professor & Head of Paediatric Nursing,was the Chief Guest for the day.
A total of 138 students are participated in Preliminary written test and 4teams qualified to the final round.

NURSING QUIZ -2015
In Commemoration of World Diabetes Day 2015, the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism conducted a Medi Quiz on "Diabetes and Endocrine Disorders" for Medical Students at New Examination Hall, Bagayam College Campus on November 03, 2015. Dr. AnandZachariah,Professor& Head,Department of Medicine Unit-I was the Chief Guest for the day. A total of 16 teams participated in the Quiz competition and 5 teams qualified to the final round.

MEDI QUIZ - PICTURES
In commemoration of the World Diabetes Day 2015, the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism organized an Exhibition & Poster competition titled “Healthy Eating in Diabetes” on 20thNovember, 2015 near ISSCC Building, to create awareness and knowledge about “Diabetes Mellitus” is one of the foremost aspects of preventive care. We are now feeling the threat of the global epidemic of “Diabetes” and it is essential to improve the awareness of not only the patient but also their family and friends.
The Departments of Cardiology, Ophthalmology, Physiotherapy, Prosthetic &Orthotic Services and Dietary, along with Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism had put up stalls which displayed awareness and knowledge about diabetes and its complications, the scope to prevent it. Free blood tests to detect diabetes mellitus and free foot examination for person with diabetes in the exhibition.
The exhibition was started with a word of prayer by Rev. Arul Das and inaugurated by Dr. Premila Lee, Nursing Superintendent, CMC Vellore.
The visually delightful Posters were judge by Dr. RekhaPai, Associate Professor,Department of Pathology, Mrs. Regina Xavier, Professor & Additional Deputy Nursing Superintendent, and Dr. Suceena Alexander, Associate Professor, Department of Nephrology,
The first prize went to Ms. Sherin K. Susan Thomas, N2 Ward the second Prize to Mr. Dinakaran, Receptionist (OPD), the third place shared by Ms.Bridget Mathew, Staff Nurse-KN Ward and Ms. S. Esther, Staff Nurse, MTS-IV.
The consolation prizes were awarded to Mrs. Deeksha, from St. Johns College of Nursing, Adukkumparai, Ms. L. LishmaShann Mathew, BSc Nursing, 2nd Year Student, Ms. Menaka, Staff Nurse,SICU and Ms. A. Ida Florence Emily, Staff Nurse, I Ward.

In commemoration of the World Diabetes Day, the department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism at CMC has conducted an essay and painting competition for school students and Quiz program for teachers around Vellore city on 13th February, 2016
The topics for the competitions are :-
Essay Competition : If you are given an opportunity to make school health policiesregarding healthy Eating - What would you do?
Painting : Junk food vs Healthy eating.
Teachers Quiz : General Health & Non communicable Disease (Scientific aspects & History) (Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, Cardio Vascular Diseases & Obesity).
We had more than 36 school 183 students and 54 teachers participating in the competitions.

The Painting Competition, contested amongst 36 schools from Vellore and the the first prize went to Ms. Keerthana. H from Sun beam Matriculation School, Second prize went to Mr. KeerthiVasan from Shristi Matriculation School and the third place shared by Ms. Ramya Shree from Sunbeam Matriculation School and Mr. Rupesh Kumar. K.N. from Shanthinikethan Matriculation School.
Five consolation prizes were awarded to Mr. Hemanth, Sunbeam CBSC School, Mr. P. Sumanth from Spark School,Ms. G. Reshma from T.M.K.V Girl Higher secondary school, and Ms. Vinothini from Vani Vidyalaya Higher Secondary School and B. Vincent from Don Bosco Higher Secondary School
The Teachers quiz competition, was closely contested amongst five schools and after six exciting rounds, Mrs. S. Jamuna& Mrs. S. Paulin Rebekah from St. Marks Matriculation Higher Secondary School baged the first place followed by Mrs. Bharathi Kumar & Mrs. Malathy. T from Sun Beam Matriculation Higher Secondary School in the second place and Mrs. Chitra& Mrs. Shenbagam from Shristi Matriculation Higher Secondary School in the third place.
The prize for the Essay competition in Tamil & English will be awarded on World Diabetes Day Valedictory function in the month of March 2016.
The fun filled celebrations of the afternoon had a lasting impression on the young minds, who had turned up in large numbers to grace to occasion.
SCHOOL COMPETITION - PICTURES
In commemoration of the World Diabetes Day, the department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism at CMC has conducted a series of event in the form of Cookery Competition, Nursing Quiz, Medi Quiz, Essay Writing Competition in English & Tamil, Painting competition, Teacher’s Quiz, Exhibition & Poster Competition, Teachers Training program (about Prevention & Diabetes Management) and Self Composed Dance competition centered around school and college students around Vellore city, from October 2015 to April 2016. In appreciation of the tremendous support we got from the people of Vellore, we organized a valedictory function held on 9th April, 2016 at Darling Residency, in order to felicitate the deserving winners of each event.
The chief guest for the occasion was the Honorable District Collection Dr. Nanda Gopal. I.A.S, who advised children to understand diabetes and exercise, control on what to eat, when to eat and how to eat. He emphasized the importance of physical activity and healthy food habits.
A Self composed dance competition on the theme was held on a topic “Diabetes & The Brain” among the School and College Students around Vellore City.
The Programme was judged by Dr. Ekta Rai, Professor, Department of Anaesthesia, Mr. Platinie&Mrs. Sunitha Serena, Dance Teachers fromPlatinie Dance Academy, Dr. Vinita Ravindran,Deputy Dean,College of Nursing andMrs. Jaya Mannali W/o Dr. (Maj.) RajeevManali.
A dance competition on the theme "Diabetes &The Brain" was held. Around 148 students from 7 schools &7 colleges participated in the competitions. Among the schools, the first prize was bagged by KatpadiGovt Hr. Secondary School, Vellore followed by N.K.M. hr Sec School Sainathapuram, Vellore in the second place and Madras Matric Higher Secondary School in the third place. The consolation prizes awarded to Donbosco Higher Secondary School, Katpadi and ShanthiNiketan Matric Higher Secondary School, Vellore.
Among colleges, Christian Medical College, Asha Association won the first prize, followed by College of Nursing, CMC Vellore and St. Johns College of Nursing in the second and third places respectively. Consolation Prizes awarded to Sri Narayani College of Nursing, Vellore and College of Nursing, CMC Vellore.
