World Diabetes Day Celebration 2012

In commemoration with world diabetes day celebration the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism, is organizing a Cookery Competition in an effort to create awareness onthe nutritional aspects of diabetes home management and encouraged to exhibit their innovativeideas in the making of tasty low calorie, low fat dinner for diabetes.

Eating right is vital if you’re trying to prevent or control diabetes. While exercise is alsoimportant, what you eat has the biggest impact when it comes to weight loss. But what does eating right for diabetes mean? You may be surprised to hear that your nutritional needs are virtually the same everyone else: no special foods or complicated diets are necessary.

A diabetes diet is simply a healthy eating plan that is high in nutrients, low in fat, and moderate in calories. It is a healthy diet for anyone! The only difference is that you need to pay more attention to some of your food choices—most notably the carbohydrates you eat. On this basis of creating awareness among the home makers, Cooking Competition was held on October 12,2012.

The Chief Guest for the evening, Dr. Gigi Chandy, from the Department of Reproductive Medicine (CMC), gave a talk on the importance of a healthy diet in diabetes. The judges for the event were Mrs. Mary Mammen former head of the Department of Dietetics (CMC), Mrs. Latha Ravikumar, and Mr. Venkatasubbu, proprietor of Darling Residency. A total of seventeen teams tested their culinary skills in cooking 'a diabetic dinner’. Ms. Sundhari Arumugham (Mob:9442181144), Sankaran Palyam, Vellore who prepared “Best Bela Bath in Wheat Rava, Spinach Greensoup, Radish Chutney, Banana StemSalad, Ragi Idli” won the first prize, the second prize went to Ms. Saritha Sathish (Mob:9360722463) who prepared “Bottle gourd and almond soup, Vegetable Sprout Salad, Raw Papaya Raita, Gobi and Methi Masala, Dal Palak, Jowar Roti, Ragi Uppuma, and China Grass and the third prize winner was Mrs. Roja Rekha (Mob.9894594348)who prepared “Thoodhuvalai, Wheat Dosa, Herbal Chutni, Mixed Vegitable Sabji” Consolation prizes were awarded to Mrs. Kavitha, Mrs. Sweethi and Mrs. Meenakshi.

In Commemoration of World Diabetes Day 2012, the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism conducted a Medi Quiz on "Diabetes and Endocrine Disorders" for Medical Students at CHTC on October 26, 2012. Dr. Anna B Pulimood, Vice-Principal, UG was the Chief Guest for the day.

The following were the Prize Winners,

First Prize –Mr. Mithun Abraham Prakash, Joseph Chacko Paul, Meghana Kovvuri,

Second Prize - John Titus George, Rosh Varghese, Vijay Alexander and

Third Prize - Akhil R, Kevin John, Jayastu Senapati.

As part of the World Diabetes Day celebrations, the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism conducted an essay and painting competition for school students and a quiz for school teachers on November 10, 2012. The topics for the essay and painting competitions were 'Risk Factors for Diabetes and Healthy Lifestyle Choices.' With diabetes emerging as a global health issue, it is important for the young population to understand the disease. Thus the themes of the competitions were aimed at helping children understand the importance of adopting preventive strategies and a healthy lifestyle. Around 200 students and 25 teachers participated in the competitions.

In the painting competition, judged by Dr. Anitha Alfred, Dr. Rekha Pai and Mrs. Anita Margaret, the first place went to Swati Priya (Sunbeam School), the second place to Satish Kumar (Voorhees School) and the third place to Angelina Sharon (Ida Scudder School). Two consolation prizes were awarded to Krithiga (Ethiraj School) and Praveen Kumar (Voorhees School). In the quiz competition, the first place went to Shrishti Vidhyashram, the second place to Ida Scudder School and the third place to St. John's Matriculation School.

In commemoration of the World Diabetes Day celebrations, Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism is conducting a cycle rally and walkathon for school students, college students & general public around Vellore city on 14th November 2012, from Ida scudder school to IMA hall. The theme for this year is “To Educate, Engage & Empower youth and general public on Diabetes.

Diabetes is an emerging global health issue and it is of paramount importance for the younger population to understand the disease, its risk factors, complications and preventive strategies. Themes for the competitions are aimed at priming the children towards understanding the importance of adopting preventive strategies. The World Diabetes Day 2012 campaign will link the urgent need for action to the protection of the health of our future generations. Particular focus will be placed on highlighting the importance of education - for health professionals, people with diabetes and people at risk – in reducing the impact of diabetes throughout the world.

The 2012 cycling for diabetes will have a special focus on children and young people as thedriving force for the promotion and dissemination of education and prevention messages. We hope that this will inspire and engage local communities to recognize the importance of early awareness of the risks and dangers of diabetes. The aim is to build awareness among children and young people of the warning signs and risk factors for diabetes and that in many cases type 2 diabetes can be prevented through healthy eating and physical activity.

The valedictory function of the events organised to commemorate World Diabetes Day 2012 was held on March 9, 2013. The chief guest for the occasion was the Director, Dr. Sunil Chandy, who advised children to understand and exercise control on what to eat, when to eat and how to eat. He emphasised the importance of physical activity and healthy food habits. A dance competition on the theme 'Education for diabetes and its prevention' was held. Among the schools, the first prize was bagged by Williams Matriculation, followed by Shrishti Matriculation in the second place and Katpadi Girls Higher Secondary School in the third place. Among colleges, Karigiri School of Nursing won the first prize, followed by Karigiri College of Health Sciences and College of Nursing, CMC in the second and third places respectively.
