Thyroid Clinic
Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism,
Christian Medical College, Vellore
The Thyroid Clinic, initiated in 2012, is a twice-weekly clinic dedicated to the evaluation and management of patients with thyroid disorders, including thyroid tumors. Thyroid diseases are among the most common endocrine disorders, and the clinic provides comprehensive care for a wide spectrum of thyroid conditions.
The thyroid gland, located in the neck, produces thyroxine, a hormone that regulates the body's metabolism. Low production of thyroxine (hypothyroidism) can lead to weight gain, dry skin, irregular menstrual cycles, fatigue, low pulse, infertility, and elevated cholesterol levels. Conversely, overproduction of thyroid hormones (hyperthyroidism) can cause weight loss, sweating, palpitations, anxiety, and, in some cases, prominent eyes.
The clinic offers individualized treatment plans, regular monitoring, and a multidisciplinary approach to optimize outcomes for all patients with thyroid disorders.
Common thyroid problems treated are:
- Hypothyroidism: Most commonly caused by autoimmune thyroid disease; other causes include iodine deficiency, surgery, or radiation.
- Hyperthyroidism: Most frequently due to Graves' disease (autoimmune); other causes include toxic nodular goiter and autonomous thyroid nodules.
- Thyroid Nodules: Includes benign nodules as well as malignant nodules such as papillary thyroid carcinoma.
- Thyroiditis: Includes painful subacute thyroiditis and Hashimoto's thyroiditis.
- Thyroid Disorders in Pregnancy: Comprehensive management for maternal and fetal health.
