World Diabetes Day Celebration 2018

The evening of 15 September 2018 was a mélange to exhibit the culinary skills for the people of vellore. The department of Endocrinology, CMC vellore had organized a cookery competition with the theme “ Diabetic biriyani”. The event was graced by panel of experts from CMC. Prof Bala seetaraman, Professor, College of nursing, CMC vellore, Dr Santhosh, department of obstetrics and Gynaecology, CMC, and Mrs Manimegalai, Head, Dept of Dietetics, CMC Vellore. Prof Asha, department of Endocrinology, CMC vellore welcomed the gathering.More than 30 participants displayed their skills in cooking biriyani from healthy ingredients like millets, brown rice, horse gram, leafy vegetables and sprouts. Novelty, cooking time, taste, nutritive value and palatability were key factors that were sought in the receipes. Prof Bala seetharaman emphasized on the importance of physical activity and healthy diet for all in a family. The family kitchen is “the cradle” to one’s health status and the significance of a healthy diet learnt from our former generations cannot be forgotten. The pandemic of diabetes and obesity is increasing in India and it is the need of the hour to shed to instill a sense of responsibility in each for a healthy life. Dr Santhosh applauded the culinary skills of all participants and reiterated the need to follow a healthy diet daily to protect everyone from obesity and diabetes.

1st prize goes to Ms. Janani & Ms. Divya from DKM College, 3rd Year BSc Nutrition & Ditetics and food service management who prepared Germinated Biriyani from Millets with Guava Sweet Corn Raitha. Second prize goes to Ms. Sumitha & Ms. Malathi, Nursing student from Sri Narayani College of Nursing who prepared Thinai Vegitable Biriyani and Kambu Vadai and Third prize goes to Mrs. Sudha & Ms. Asha from A1ward Nursing staff, CMC Vellore who prepared Ragi Vermicelli Chicken Biriyani.

The first consolation by Ms. Ida Florence Emily & Ms. Evangeline Ida Mary from HICC Nursing staff CMC vellore & the second consolation by Ms. Monishree Mohana Priya & Ms. Manonmani Arul Doss.

In Commemoration of World Diabetes Day 2018, the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism conducted a Medi Quiz on "Diabetes and Endocrine Disorders" for Medical Students at New Examination Hall, Bagayam College Campus on 9th October, 2018 Dr. Vinay Oommen, Vice Principal (UG) and Professor, of Physiology, Christian Medical College, Vellore was the Chief Guest for the day. A total of 13 teams participated in the Quiz competition and 5 teams qualified to the final round.

MEDI QUIZ FOR MEDICAL STUDENTS - PICTURES



In Commemoration of World Diabetes Day 2018, the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism conducted a Dia-Quiz on "Diabetes and Endocrine Disorders" for Nursing Students at College of Nursing, CMC Vellore on October 30, 2018. Mrs. Regina Xavier, Professor & Additional Deputy Nursing Superintendent, was the Chief Guest for the day.

A total of 351 students are participated in Preliminary written test and 4 teams qualified to the final round.

DIA QUIZ - PICTURES



The Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism at CMC Vellore conducted the ‘Essay and Painting Competition for School Students, on and Teachers’ Quiz’ on 10th November, 2018 at Darling Residency, Vellore.

228 students and 32 teachers participated from 24 schools for the ‘Essay, Painting and Teachers Quiz Competition’. The chief guest for the event was Dr. B.J. Prashantham, Director , Professor of Counselling Psychology, Christian Counselling Center. In his keynote address, he facilitated the participants as well as the winners and also spoke about the relevance of diabetes as an emerging epidemic in India. He underscored the individual’s right to good health, their duty to prevent what can be prevented and to seek treatment early. Additionally, he highlighted the necessity of support from the family for the patients live the normal life. He encouraged the students to spread awareness and inspire others to do the same.

The visually delightful paintings, on the theme ‘Family support in diabetes’, garnered with pristine creativity, were judged by Dr. Aureen Ruby D’Cunha, Assistant Professor from the Department of Paediatric Surgery, CMC Vellore, Mrs. Lilly Prasad, Professor from the Department of Paediatric Nursing, CMC Vellore and Dr. Reeba Roshan, Lecturer from the Department of Developmental Paediatrics, CMC Vellore. They commended the students’ artistic perception and innovative ideas regarding the challenges faced by the family of a diabetic which translated on to the canvas. The paintings depicted the various subtle difficulties that patients face and how their family can be the motivators they need to overcome these.

Out of 57 paintings, the 1st prize for the painting competition was bagged by Ms. Liviya Laakshi, from Vani Vidhyalaya while the Second and third Prizes went to Ms. Valli from Desia Matric Higher Secondary School and Ms. Avanthika from BMD Jain School, respectively. Consolation prizes were awarded to Ms. Sandhya from Sunbeam CBSE School and Ms. Lavanya from Sparks Matriculation School.

The Teacher’s Quiz saw fervent competition where Mrs. Joyce Jaya Kumar and Mrs. K. Chithra from Shristi Matriculation School came out on top. The Second prize went to Mrs. Vinitha. S and Deepa. S from Spark Matriculation Higher Secondary School and the third prize was shared between Mrs. Shalini and Mrs. Anitha Sara from IDA Scudder school and Mrs. Sri Maragatha Valli. G and Mrs. Flora Regina from Shrishti Vidyashram.

The winners of the essay competition on the theme ‘How can I prevent diabetes from affecting my family members?’ will be declared after review.

These prizes will be awarded during the valedictory function which will be held in Feb-2019.

The event was spear headed by Dr. Nihal Thomas, Professor & Head Unit-I, Dr. Riddhi Das Gupta, Associate Professor, Mrs. Bharathi, Diabetes Educator and Mr. Vinod A. R., Secretary from the Department of Endocrinology.


ESSAY & PAINTING COMPETITION - PICTURES



The Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism at Christian Medical College, Vellore organised an Exhibition & Poster competition titled “How Does Diabetes Affect Young People and Their Families?” on 14th November 2018 in the CMC Hospital Campus near the main entrance between 9.00am and 5.00pm, in commemoration of the World Diabetes Day 2018. The theme of this year was “FAMILY AND DIABETES”.

The Departments of Cardiology, Ophthalmology, Dentistry, Nephrology, Vascular Surgery, Physiotherapy, Prosthetics & Orthotics, Dietetics and Community Health Nursing, along with the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism put up stalls which disseminated awareness about diabetes, its complications and the scope for its prevention. Screening for diabetes was performed for 692 patients. Foot and eye examination too was done for them. They were also educated on the various challenges they would face and how they can be overcome. As a first, genetic screening for young onset diabetes was also done. The patients also enjoyed Infotainment in the form of puppets show and games which served to further reinforce the message. Hourly lucky draw was conducted for all registered patients and the six winners were given glucometers.

The exhibition began with a word of prayer by Rev. Raja. Dr. Anil Kuruvilla, Professor & Head Unit-II, Neonatology, & Associate Director,CMC Vellore was the chief guest for the day. Dr. Asha, Professor, Endocrinology and Dr. Bala Seetharaman, Deputy Nursing Superintendent and Head of Specialty-I spoke about the importance of life style modification with special attention to young patients. Posters were judged by Dr. Margaret Shanthi, Professor, Department of Pharmacology, Dr.Barney Issac, Associate Professor, Department of Pulmonary Medicine and Mrs. Dorothy Devakirubai, Additional Deputy Nursing Superintendent, & Nurse Manager, Maternity Department.

They commended the design language and innovation that went in to the making of these posters, which shed light upon the toll that diabetes takes on the patients and how their families can make this burden lighter. Ms. Beulah Alex from C Ward bagged the first prize while the second prize and the third prize went to Ms. Lishma Shann Mathew from Community Health Nursing department and Ms. Lavanya. A., Std. X student from Spark Matric Hr Sec School respectively. The consolation prizes were awarded to Ms. Prema Gunamani from Staff Nurse P3 ward and Mr. Asif Khan from Neuro ICU, Specialty VII.

They also appreciated the dedication, research and good effort behind the organization and execution of the stalls. The Department of Cardiology was awarded the first prize while the Department of Nephrology were the runner’s-up.

EXHIBTIION AT CHITTOOR CAMPUS - PICTURES



In commemoration of the World Diabetes Day 2018-19, the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism at CMC has conducted  a series of events namely Cookery Competition, Nursing Quiz, Medi Quiz, Essay Writing Competition in English & Tamil, Painting competition, Teacher’s Quiz, Exhibition & Poster Competition, Video clipping competition, and Self Composed Dance competition targeted towards school and college students around Vellore city from October 2018 to February 2019.  In appreciation of a tremendous support we got from the people, we organized a valedictory function to felicitate the deserving winners in each event.

The dance competition on the dual theme “diabetes and foot disease for schools and “ Diabetes and smoking” Control one and quit the other for schools and colleges respectively. The event was graced by the esteemed presence of Dr Anna Pulimood, Principal, CMC Vellore. Dr Pulimood addressed the gathering and emphasized on the relative definition of success in the lives of one another and the importance of good health to attain milestones in one’s life. The evening was garnered by a myriad of students from 11 schools and 5 colleges from Vellore, who presented folk and contemporary dance performances to self composed thematic lyrics. The performances were judged by a panel of distinguished judges. More to add to the grandeur, the gathering unanimously pledged to “ defeat diabetes”. The winners were awarded by the dignitaries.

Among the schools, the first prize was bagged by Spark Matric Hr Secondary school followed by BMD Jain school in the second place and St. Marks Matric Hr Secondary school in the third place. The consolation prize awarded to N.K.M Hr Secondary school.

Among colleges, Addon Institute Of Medical Mission And Research Centre, won the first prize, followed by  CMC College of Nursing and Narayani college of nursing in the second and third places respectively. The consolation prize is awarded to Global college of Arts and Science.
